Pep Hamilton is out and Rob Chudzinski is in. We all know that now and it’s time to move forward with this move. Is it a good move for the team? Nobody is really sure just yet as “Chud” hasn’t put together a game plan for this team yet. His first stab at being the offensive coordinator for the Colts will be against the best defense in the NFL in the Denver Broncos. Some of the questions that I have seen asked is whether Chud can get the job done and how is he going to call the games. Well, I have an opinion on that. He will do the opposite of what Pep was doing. Many times the play calling from Hamilton was very suspect and not helpful to the team and really put them in the spot to have to fight back come the fourth quarter.
Chud is a very aggressive offensive coordinator. He likes to run the ball like Pep did, but he also loves to mix in the play action pass and that is where Luck is amazing. Chud cannot put in a whole new offense in the middle of the season so basically he will have to call plays from the same playbook, but he will be able to put his own twist on some of these plays. Chud is a breath of fresh air and has the potential to breath new life into this team to help with the turn around of this dreadful season thus far.
Chudzinski has a history of turning bad offensive units into one of the best in the league. He did that without a ton of talent on the unit he was head coaching in the Cleveland Browns so this may be a little bit different for him to have so many offensive weapons at his disposal. Chud has possibly the best receiving corps he has ever had and a quarterback that has elite talent that needs help getting out of his own way this season in Andrew Luck. Chud took Cam Newton as a rookie and made him the Offensive Rookie of the Year. He now has Andrew Luck at the most important position on his offensive unit. Luck knows this game very well, but this season he seems very hesitant to do the things that made everyone love him. Chud has the smarts to help Luck get things going again in the right direction.
There are people who are split with what happened to Pep Hamilton. Hamilton had his ups and downs in Indianapolis, but the downs were in the deepest depths of things no one likes to talk about. Like I said before, this move needed to happen to help this team get over the hump quicker than they maybe would have with Pep doing the job. Chud has some obstacles in front of him and I’m sure he knows that, however, if the team can buy in quickly I think the turnaround will be fast and they could become contenders when the playoffs hit. I’m not saying the team is going to the Super Bowl this year. I think if that happened this would be known as the miracle season. I’m not saying that Chud is going to take this offense and have them in the top five by the end of the regular season either, but I know that he has the know-how and this team has the talent to do great things. Let’s all get behind this team in full force and watch the fireworks happen.
