After another heartbreaking loss to the hands of the Carolina Panthers a move was needed to help jolt this team in the right direction. Today Colts owner Jim Irsay made that move. For the last week the news has been that more than likely Irsay would wait until the bye week to make any decisions about his coaching staff, but after the inconsistent play calling against the Panthers Irsay jumped the gun and made a move many saw coming. Pep Hamilton was relieved of his duties as the Indianpolis Colts offensive coordinator and Rob Chudzinski was named as Hamilton’s successor.
Hamilton has come under fire by the local media and the Colts fan base since last season for his questionable play calling and lack of use of the personnel at his disposal. Hamilton’s name has been brought up for quite some time as the member of the Colts coaching staff that needed to be replaced and it seems the Colts owner finally agreed.
Rob “Chud” Chudzinski was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns two years ago and his stint as a head coach was not very impressive after going 4-12 in 2013. However, when Chud is the offensive coordinator of any team his offenses are top ten which is something this Colts team needs desperately and is more than capable of. Chudzinski does a great job of keeping the play calls balanced and rides the hot hand when there is one. Hamilton stuck to his plan even if it didn’t completely benefit the team and it clearly stunted production.
Chud took a terrible Browns team in 2008 and turned them into a top five offense in which their team had four players get named to the Pro Bowl. He was Cam Newton‘s offensive coordinator in his rookie season. The same season that Newton won rookie of the year honors.
Chudzinkski for sure has a monster test in front of him in his first week with the job as the Colts will be facing a top ten defense in the Broncos. Chud will have to come up with a game plan that Andrew Luck and company can execute completely. This is a task that I feel Chud is up for and as long as players are going to buy into this change in their coach then the game Sunday should be very competitive.
This also allows for Chuck Pagano to have the guy he wanted in the offensive coordinator position all along. Pagano brought in Chud to take over when the time was right and the time has presented itself. Now we will hopefully see Chuck and his offensive coordinator get on the same page.
