The Colts finally made a “big” move in free agency late last night by adding veteran cornerback Patrick Robinson. Robinson, a former first round draft pick by the Saints, is just what the Colts needed. He doesn’t have the tendency to get burned on go routes, *cough* Greg Toler *cough*, and he hasn’t hit his ceiling quite yet. He had an impressive rookie season for New Orleans before suffering a patella injury in 2013, derailing much his season and career. He was able to resurrect himself in San Diego last season by showing that he can still play at a high level. In 2015 Robinson allowed the least amount of receiving yards against him in the NFL (barely 300 total!). If that doesn’t scream potential for a shutdown cornerback then I don’t know what does.
Is this the move that everyone has been waiting for? No. However, it’s a solid move that really bolsters the defensive backfield for the Colts. Robinson’s contract is for 3 years and 12 million total which is not a bank breaker and shows Robinson that the Colts have faith in him by signing him to a three-year deal instead of a one year deal. It’s also a $1.8 million saving per season over what the Colts were paying Greg Toler. Grigson made this move methodically. He didn’t just ride into the circus when it started to land the biggest lions he could find. No, he took his time and made sure that they are going to get quality over quantity which is something he really hasn’t done in the past. Some people may not see this as a win for the Colts, but Robinson is young, 28 years old, and still has a few years left on his tires. If he plays like he did in San Diego here then the Colts “No Fly Zone” should be back in full effect and it will help the pass rush tremendously. There are still moves to be made of course, but it looks like the NFL draft is where Grigson will be proving his worth this season.
