The Colts have made additions to their “Final” 53 man roster. It is always a stressful time for the players sitting on the bottom of the roster and sometimes provides surprises to both players and fans. The team is always looking to improve the roster especially after the team looks to be “thin” at key positions. The team added the following players to the 53 man roster on Sunday:
DT -T.Y. McGill
G-Robert Myers
To make room for these players, the team made the following moves to make space on the roster.
Waived: Amarlo Herrera
Waived-Injured: Dan Herron
Both players were thought to be locks to make the roster and they both did. However, in Herron’s case, an injury to his shoulder in the last preseason game forced the team’s hand. He will revert to the team’s injured reserve list if he doesn’t get claimed. In Herrera’s case it seemed to be more related to a case of too many players with similar abilities. Especially with a trade for Sio Moore over the Labor Day weekend.
Besides the player additions to the roster, the team also formed the practice squad from the following players:
OLB-Daniel Adongo*
G-David Arkin*
WR-Quan Bray*
WR-Duron Carter*
T-Ulrick John*
S-Dewey McDonald*
ILB-Josh McNary*
CB-Eric Patterson*
DT-Jerris Pendleton*
TE-Erik Swoope*
*Have played with team prior.
The biggest takeaway from the list is most of the players have shown some flashes that indicate growth for the future while also giving the team some flexibility in case injuries to one of the positions listed is available to come into the system and have knowledge of how the team operates. Duron Carter seemed to be a consensus to make the roster a few weeks ago, now he has a chance to learn and grow in the Colts system, and hopefully contribute if he gets the call to the active roster. Josh McNary gets a second chance with the team after some ugly charges were brought against him late last year that he was recently cleared of.
The only problem after these moves is the team is still thin at DL and RB. Adding McGill helps, but the line is very young and inexperienced except for Kendall Langford (who is new to the system). Running Back is a little dicier now that the depth chart looks like this:
Frank Gore
Boom Herron’s
Josh Robinson (Rookie; Concussion Protocol)
Vick Ballard (Hamstring)
Tyler Varga (Rookie)
It seems Varga would be the team’s second back if both Robinson and Ballard are still banged up. This might be something to watch to see if the team brings in someone healthy (Monte Ball?)
So the moves have been made and more may continue, what do you think about the roster?
