092514-NFL-Tennessee-Titans-Charlie-Whitehurst-SS-PI.vresize.1200.675.high.41The Colts made some roster moves to help shore areas of need such as quarterback which recently became a need after the recent laceration of Andrew Luck’s kidney and an abdominal tear which will likely keep him sidelined for 2-6 weeks.

Matt Hasselbeck will be the starting QB in his absence so the team needed another quarterback in case Hasselbeck were to go down to an injury. This lead the team to “Clipboard Jesus” Charlie Whitehurst. Reports indicated that the team tried to talk to Jason Campbell to be the back up, but he declined and decided to stayed retired because he seems to enjoy the time he has to spend with his family. Rob Chudinski was the OC for Cleveland while Campbell was part of the revolving carousel of quarterbacks there.

Whitehurst was a member of the Titans since 2014 up until being cut this week. Whitehurst started 5 games last year, but became expendable after drafting Marcus Mariotta and being passed on the depth chart by Zach Mettenberger. Whitehurst is just an insurance policy to Colts current insurance policy Hasselbeck and hopefully won’t have to see any action.

The team also signed linebacker Daniel Adongo from the practice squad to the 53 man roster and in the process waived running back Josh Robinson after the team seems to have settled on Gore and Bradshaw as the recipients of all the carries.

In news unrelated to the roster, Texas A&M announced that they are suing the Colts for infringing on their trademark “The 12th Man”. ESPN reported that the school sent a letter in 2006 to the Colts a cease and desist, but recently the team had sent out. flier about purchasing season tickets and referenced the “The 12 Man”. I don’t know what can be said about this other than A&M is within their legal right to protect their trademark.

Finally lots of speculation has begun to pick up concerning who will be making calls on the sidelines next season in Indy. By all accounts, Coach Chuck Pagano is likely done after this season unless the team somehow makes the Super Bowl, leaving the door open for a return of current Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban. The idea is Saban’s time in Alabama is becoming less joyful and he might be considering a return to the NFL. At this point it’s pure speculation, but makes a lot of sense for many reasons. First and most important, the Colts have a pretty good guy at quarterback, something he wasn’t able to solve while he was the coach of Miami. He famously chose Dante Culpepper over Drew Brees, which seemed to precipitate his end and exit of the NFL in favor of the college ranks. It is being rumored that Jim Irsay is looking to make a splash if the coaching job were to become vacant.
